Gorey Municipal District councillors are calling for CCTV cameras to be put in place in Gorey Town Park after it was vandalised earlier this month.
The €1.8 million revamp of Gorey Town Park and Showgrounds is due to begin next year, but councillors are requesting basic cameras be put in place for the meantime before the contractor begins to reduce vandalism.
‘It will help prevent this happening again in the future,’ said Cllr Malcolm Byrne. ‘There is a small number of people who don’t care but I don’t think we should give in.’
Amanda Byrne, district manager, said they probably won’t replace the smashed lights in the town park because a contractor will be appointed soon.
Cllr Byrne suggested advertising a reward for those who might come forward with information about the vandals. Cllr Fionntán Ó Súilleabhain requested placing basic cameras in the park until the contractor moves in.
