Madurai police seek residents’ help to install CCTV cameras – Times of India

MADURAI: The Madurai city police have identified 150 junctions where CCTV cameras are required to prevent crimes and to solve cases.

Police have decided to seek help from the public, commercial establishments and associations, who can either contribute money or come forward to install them.

While some of the junctions are already covered, many are yet to be covered under the third eye in the city. Camera footages have been playing a major role in cracking crime cases and recovering the properties.

With the city witnessing increasing number of floating population, crime prevention has become a challenging task for the police as many new people are getting involved, officials said.

Madurai city police commissioner S Davidson Devasirvatham said CCTV cameras have become quite necessary to crack cases and identify road rule violators.

“Each of the identified junction needs four cameras. Hospitals, commercial establishments, trade bodies and other associations can come forward to sponsor cameras. It will take around Rs 25, 000 to install CCTV cameras at a junction,” he said.

He said the Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industries has agreed to install cameras at 12 of the shortlisted junctions.

The junction cameras would be connected to the respective police stations, where the visuals can be constantly monitored. The concerned police inspector can access footage to check any violation and detect the perpetrators of crime in no time, he said.

Those interested in contributing for the camera installation or sponsor the installation can contact assistant commissioner of police (intelligence section) Sivakumar at 0452- 2520760 and 9498180078.
